Typography on the Web

A nice way to add a little pizzazz to any blog post is to insert a complimentary image into your article, but what if you want to do something different with the typeface as well? Unfortunately, the Internet limits us to web-safe fonts. In other words, fonts that will work on just about any visitor’s computer, because every computer comes with them preinstalled. Sure, Arial Black, Georgia, and Times New Roman are great fonts, but they start to get a bit dull after you’ve seen them 10,000 times.

The solution: Insert an image into your post. No, I’m not repeating myself. What I mean is create your header text (or whichever area you want to use interesting typography) in Photoshop and save it as a transparent PNG. Then, simply insert it into your article in the appropriate place. It’s a simple and easy way to dress-up any blog post and make it look a little less ordinary. In case you haven’t noticed, that’s exactly what I did for the header of this article.

If you’re not exactly sure how to do this, it’s easy… Just open a new transparent layer in Photoshop, add your text using the font of your choice, and then “save as” a PNG. Voila, now you can put attractive typography anywhere you like in your blog without having to chose from one of the default fonts.
