5 SEO Mistakes You Can Easily Avoid

In maintaining your own SEO for your website, be sure not to fall into these five pitfalls of the SEO world.

Using the Wrong Keywords
Probably the biggest mistake that people make with their site's SEO is using incorrect keywords. The keywords you choose cannot just be pulled out of a hat. They cannot be the words you think people might type to find your site. You need to do a bit of research on which keywords to use. A website keyword suggestion tool is a great starting point.

Not Maintaining Your SEO
SEO is a full-time job. You need to constantly be on top of it, keeping up with the latest trends from Google and SEO experts. SEO is not a "set it and forget it" philosophy. Recheck your keywords. Make sure they are still the most relevant for your site. Read all the the latest SEO news and adapt your site to follow all the newest rules of the road.

Excessive Backlinking
Okay. Don't read this one wrong. Backlinking is important. It is very important. And, in most circumstances, the more backlinks, the better. But all of those backlinks should be quality backlinks. You don't want to spam-farm your backlinks. One quality backlink is better than twenty crappy backlinks. And excessive backlinks can get you blacklisted.

Not Enough Keywords in Your Content
So we talked about keywords, right? Use them. You want to use your keywords as often as you can, and as many as necessary, as long as they are relevant and natural. No just make a page of keywords, either. Just make sure your content is keyword rich and that your keywords are appropriate and relevant.

Poor URLs
If your URLs say what your page is, bonus. The URL is the first thing a crawler looks at, and places a ton of importance on. If your URL is just a string of numbers and letters, it means nothing to no one, and will not go far to helping your indexing on Google and other major search engines.

Follow these tips, and your at-home SEO for your small business's web site will get you the results that you want and deserve.
